SS 304 washers suit most indoor and outdoor work. SS 316 washers resist salt water and chemicals. SS 202 washers are an economical choice for dry, indoor use. Use the same grade as the bolt and nut to avoid galvanic corrosion.

A plain washer spreads the load and protects the surface. A spring washer stops the nut from loosening under vibration. Many joints use both: the plain washer against the part and the spring washer under the nut.
An M12 plain washer to DIN 125 has a 13 mm hole, a 24 mm outer diameter and a thickness of 2.5 mm.
