How a Wedge Lock Washer Works

Each pair has cams on the inner faces and radial teeth on the outer faces. The teeth grip the nut and the joint surface, so any movement can only happen between the cams. The cam angle is steeper than the thread pitch, so if the nut starts to turn back, the pair wedges apart and raises the bolt tension, which stops the nut from loosening. Wedge lock washers are standardised in DIN 25201.

How are wedge lock washers fitted?

Fit each pair as supplied, with the cam faces together, under the part that is turned. For a through bolt with a nut, use one pair under the bolt head and one pair under the nut, then tighten to the normal torque for the bolt.

Wedge lock washer or spring washer?

A spring washer suits general joints. A wedge lock washer keeps the joint locked even under heavy vibration and shock, where a spring washer adds little locking. Use the same steel grade as the bolt and nut.

Can wedge lock washers be reused?

They can usually be reused if the teeth and cams are not worn or damaged. Replace them if the teeth are flattened.
