How a Spring Washer Works

A spring washer is a split ring with its ends bent apart. When the nut is tightened, the washer is flattened and pushes back like a spring, which keeps tension in the joint and helps to stop the nut from loosening. The common standards are DIN 127 and IS 3063.

Applications

  • Motors, pumps and fans
  • Electrical panels and transformers
  • Automobile and machine assemblies
  • Railway and structural fittings

Spring Washer FAQs

Where does the spring washer go?

Under the nut or bolt head that is turned, on top of a plain washer if one is used.

Spring washer or nylock nut?

Both resist loosening. A spring washer works with any nut and at high temperature. A nylock nut needs no extra part but suits temperatures up to about 120 °C.

Do spring washers work on high tensile bolts?

Spring washers suit mild steel and general joints. On high tensile 8.8 to 12.9 bolts, which are tightened to a high load, they add little locking, so a nylock nut or correct tightening is preferred.
