Stainless Steel or High Tensile?

Stainless steel bolts (SS 304, SS 316, SS 202) resist rust and need no coating, so they suit food, pharma, water, chemical and outdoor work. High tensile bolts (8.8, 10.9, 12.9) are hardened steel with two to three times the strength of mild steel, for machinery and structural joints. Mild steel 4.6 suits light, general work.

Bolts and Machine Screws FAQs

What is the difference between a bolt and a machine screw?

A bolt is usually tightened with a nut and often has a plain shank under the head. A machine screw is threaded right up to the head and is often screwed into a tapped hole. In daily use the two names overlap.

Which stainless steel grade is best for bolts?

SS 304 is the standard choice. SS 316 is better near the sea and around chemicals, and SS 202 is an economical option for indoor, dry use.
