A wave washer is a flat ring formed into gentle waves. When it is compressed, it acts as a light spring that takes up end play, absorbs vibration and keeps parts under light, even pressure. The common standard is DIN 137.
A wave washer gives a light, even preload and takes up play. A spring washer is stiffer and is used under nuts to resist loosening.
