Stud Bolt or Threaded Rod?

A threaded rod is threaded along its full length and comes in long lengths that are cut to size on site. A stud bolt is cut to a fixed length, ready to fit with a nut on each end. A half threaded stud has a plain shank for extra strength in shear.

Grades Explained

  • B7: chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (ASTM A193) for high temperature and pressure
  • B8 / B8M: stainless steel 304 / 316 (ASTM A193) for corrosion resistance
  • L7: alloy steel for low-temperature service (ASTM A320)
  • 4.6 / 8.8: mild steel and high tensile threaded rods for general and heavy use

Where Studs and Threaded Rods Are Used

  • Pipe flanges and valves in refineries and chemical plants
  • Pumps, compressors and pressure vessels
  • Hangers for pipes, ducts and cable trays
  • Chemical anchoring and foundation work
  • Machinery and structural tie rods

Stud and Threaded Rod FAQs

Which nut goes with a B7 stud bolt?

B7 studs are normally used with ASTM A194 grade 2H heavy hex nuts.

Can threaded rods be cut to length?

Yes. Threaded rods are supplied in full lengths of 1 m, 2 m or 3 m, or cut to the length you need.

How do I join two threaded rods?

Use a long nut (coupling nut) of the same size, and screw each rod halfway into it.
