Hex Nut Standards

The hexagon nut is the most widely used nut. The common standards are DIN 934, ISO 4032 and IS 1364 (Part 3).

Choosing the Right Nut Grade

A nut should be as strong as the bolt it is used with. Use a class 8 nut with an 8.8 bolt, class 10 with 10.9 and class 12 with 12.9. For stainless steel, use the same grade for the nut and the bolt, for example SS 304 with SS 304. Our bolt grade chart explains the grades.

Finishes

  • Self finish (plain) for indoor use or parts that will be painted
  • Zinc plated: a thin, bright coating for indoor and mild conditions
  • Hot dip galvanized (HDG): a thick zinc coating for outdoor structures, towers and solar plants. HDG nuts are tapped oversize to fit HDG bolts.

Applications

  • Structural steel and construction
  • Machinery and equipment assembly
  • Solar structures and electrical towers
  • Automobile and engineering parts

Hex Nut FAQs

What size spanner fits an M12 hex nut?

An M12 nut to ISO 4032 takes an 18 mm spanner, while the older DIN 934 version takes 19 mm. M10 takes 16 mm (17 mm for DIN 934) and M16 takes 24 mm.

Are SS 304 nuts magnetic?

SS 304 and SS 316 are almost non-magnetic. Cold forming can make them slightly magnetic, which is normal and does not reduce rust resistance.

Can I use a stainless steel nut on a zinc plated bolt?

It is better not to mix them. Different metals in contact can cause galvanic corrosion outdoors, so use a nut and bolt of the same material.
