A half threaded stud has a threaded part and a plain, unthreaded part, unlike a fully threaded stud. The plain shank gives extra strength against shear and helps to locate parts accurately.
Use a half threaded stud where the joint carries shear load or needs accurate location. Use a fully threaded SS stud or threaded rod where you need an adjustable length.
