About GI Threaded Rods

A threaded rod is threaded along its full length. It is cut to the length you need and used with nuts and washers, or joined end to end with long nuts. GI (galvanized iron) rods have a zinc coating that protects the steel from rust. Threaded rods are covered by DIN 975 and DIN 976.

Grades and Finishes

  • Grade 4.6: mild steel for hangers, supports and general use
  • Grade 8.8: high tensile steel for heavy loads and anchoring
  • Zinc plated: a bright coating for indoor and covered areas
  • HDG: a thick hot dip coating for outdoor and wet areas

Applications

  • Hangers for pipes, ducts, cable trays and sprinklers
  • False ceiling and MEP supports
  • Chemical anchoring in concrete
  • Machinery, tanks and structural tie rods

GI Threaded Rod FAQs

What lengths do threaded rods come in?

MS and GI full threaded rods are available from ready stock in 1 m, 2 m and 3 m lengths, and SS 304 and SS 202 rods in 1 m and 2 m lengths. Cut lengths from 20 mm to 500 mm are also supplied.

What is the difference between GI and HDG threaded rods?

Both have a zinc coating. GI rods are usually electro zinc plated with a thin, bright coat. HDG rods are dipped in molten zinc for a much thicker coat that lasts longer outdoors.

Which nut should I use on an M10 threaded rod?

Use an M10 hex nut of the same material and finish. To join two rods, use an M10 long nut.
