A stud bolt is a threaded rod without a head. It takes a nut on each end, or screws into a tapped hole at one end. Stainless steel studs resist rust and are used where joints are exposed to water, weather or chemicals. Fully threaded studs are covered by DIN 976, and threaded rods by DIN 975.
SS 304 has more nickel and resists rust better, so it is the standard choice for outdoor and wet areas. SS 316 adds molybdenum for coastal, marine and chemical sites, and is also available as half threaded studs and B8M studs. SS 202 costs less and suits indoor, dry use. Our SS 304 vs SS 316 vs SS 202 guide compares the grades.
A threaded rod comes in long lengths, such as 1 m, 2 m or 3 m, and is cut to size. A stud bolt is already cut to a fixed length, ready to fit.
Only slightly, after cold working. A slight pull from a magnet is normal for SS 304 and does not mean the material is wrong.
