How a Nylock Nut Works

A nylon ring sits inside the top of the nut. When the bolt passes through, it cuts its own thread in the nylon, which grips the bolt and stops the nut from loosening under vibration. The common standards are DIN 985 / ISO 10511 (thin type) and DIN 982 / ISO 7040 (regular height).

Applications

  • Vehicles, trailers and agricultural machines
  • Pumps, motors, fans and blowers
  • Conveyors and vibrating equipment
  • Electrical panels and enclosures

Nylock Nut FAQs

Can a nylock nut be reused?

It can be reused a few times, but the nylon loses some grip each time. For critical joints, fit a new nylock nut.

What temperature can a nylock nut take?

Standard nylon inserts are suitable up to about 120 °C. For hotter places, use a spring washer or a lock nut instead.

What is the difference between DIN 985 and DIN 982?

Both are nylon insert lock nuts. DIN 985 is the lower, thin type used for most jobs. DIN 982 is taller and is used where more thread engagement is needed.
