What Is a J Bolt?

A J bolt is a foundation (anchor) bolt bent into a J shape. The hooked end is cast into concrete, and the threaded end sticks out to hold a column base plate, machine or pole with nuts and washers. The hook stops the bolt from pulling out of the concrete. Foundation bolts are covered by IS 5624.

J Bolt Materials

  • Mild steel 4.6 / 5.6 for general foundations, sheds and light structures
  • High tensile 8.8 / 10.9 for heavy columns, machinery and towers
  • Stainless steel SS 304 / SS 316 for wet, coastal or chemical areas, and SS 202 for dry, indoor use

For outdoor and buried use, mild steel J bolts are usually hot dip galvanized.

Applications

  • Steel column base plates and pre-engineered buildings
  • Street light, signboard and high-mast poles
  • Machine and pump foundations
  • Transmission and telecom towers
  • Solar structure foundations

J Bolt FAQs

What information do I need to order J bolts?

Send the diameter, total length, thread length, hook length, material grade, finish and quantity. A drawing or sketch helps us quote correctly. You can send it through our enquiry form.

What is the difference between a J bolt and an L bolt?

Both are bent foundation bolts. A J bolt has a curved hook, while an L bolt has a 90° bend. Both hold in concrete in the same way.

How deep should a J bolt be set in concrete?

The embedment depth depends on the bolt size, the load and the concrete grade, and is set by the structural engineer. Always follow the approved drawing.
