About U Bolts

A U bolt is a rod bent into a U shape with threads on both ends. It wraps around a pipe or tube and is tightened with two nuts onto a plate or channel. Its size is set by the pipe diameter, the thread size and the leg length. DIN 3570 covers U bolts for pipe clamping.

Applications

  • Pipe supports in plants and buildings
  • Vehicle leaf springs and axles
  • Antenna, pole and signboard mounting
  • Cable trays and solar structures

U Bolt Materials and Finishes

  • Mild steel 4.6 / 5.6 for pipe supports and general clamping; hot dip galvanized or zinc plated for outdoor use
  • High tensile 8.8 / 10.9 for heavy clamping such as vehicle leaf springs
  • Stainless steel SS 304 / SS 316 for chemical, food and coastal sites, and SS 202 for dry, indoor use

How to Choose a U Bolt

  • Pipe size: the inside width of the U should match the outside diameter of the pipe, not its nominal bore.
  • Leg length: long enough to pass through the support and take a washer and two nuts.
  • Thread size: larger pipes and heavier loads need a thicker rod.
  • Finish: hot dip galvanized for outdoor and wet areas, stainless steel for corrosive sites.

U Bolt FAQs

How do I measure a U bolt?

Give the thread size, the inside width between the legs (or the pipe size), the inside height (leg length) and the thread length on each leg.

Do U bolts come with nuts?

U bolts are normally fitted with two hex nuts and washers. Ask for them with the U bolts so the set matches in grade and finish.
