How a Lock Nut Works

A lock nut is a thin hexagon nut that is tightened hard against a standard nut on the same bolt. The two nuts press against each other and stop either one from turning loose. The common standards are DIN 439, ISO 4035 and DIN 936 (fine thread).

For a lock nut with a nylon ring, see our nylock nuts.

Applications

  • Threaded rods and adjusting screws
  • Machinery and vibrating equipment
  • Pumps, valves and couplings
  • Bearings and shaft assemblies

Lock Nut FAQs

Which nut goes on first, the lock nut or the full nut?

Fit the thin lock nut first and the full nut on top. Hold the lock nut with one spanner and tighten the full nut against it.

Can a lock nut be used on its own?

No. A thin lock nut carries less load than a full nut and can strip if it is used alone. Always use it with a full hex nut. Where only one nut will fit, use a nylock nut instead.

Lock nut or nylock nut: which should I use?

A thin lock nut needs a second nut and two spanners, but it has no nylon and can be reused many times. A nylock nut locks on its own with a nylon ring and is quicker to fit, but the nylon is not suited to high temperatures.
