How a Shear Nut Works

A shear nut has a smooth, tapered lower body and a hexagon on top, joined by a thin neck. It is tightened with a normal spanner or socket. At the set torque the neck shears and the hexagon breaks away, leaving only the smooth cone on the bolt. With no flats to grip, the nut cannot be loosened with ordinary tools.
