Grub Screw – Product Details

JMIKS Fasteners supplies grub screws (hexagon socket set screws) from M3 to M36 and ¼” to 1-1/4″ BSW. In the trade, steel grub screws are sold as grades 4.6 to 12.9. The standard grades set screws by hardness instead, and the class for steel socket grub screws is 45H (ISO 898-5). Stainless steel SS 304 and SS 316 grub screws are available on request. A grub screw has no head: it is turned with an Allen key and locks a part such as a pulley or collar onto a shaft.

Grub Screw Point Types

Grub screws are made with different points for different jobs. The common standards are:

  • Flat point (DIN 913 / ISO 4026) for frequent adjustment, without damaging the shaft
  • Cone point (DIN 914 / ISO 4027) that sits in a drilled seat for a strong, permanent hold
  • Dog point (DIN 915 / ISO 4028) that locates in a hole or slot
  • Cup point (DIN 916 / ISO 4029), the most common type, which bites into the shaft

The point type is part of the specification, so please mention it in your enquiry.

Applications

  • Pulleys, gears and couplings on shafts
  • Knobs, collars and handles
  • Machine tools and printing machines
  • Pumps and motors

Grub Screw FAQs

Is a grub screw the same as a set screw?

Yes. Grub screw and set screw are two names for a headless screw that is tightened inside a threaded hole to hold one part against another.

What grade are grub screws?

A grub screw presses on a shaft instead of carrying a pull like a bolt, so steel set screws are graded by hardness under ISO 898-5. The number is one tenth of the minimum Vickers hardness, so 45H means at least 450 HV. Steel socket (Allen key) grub screws are class 45H, and are often sold in the trade as 12.9. Classes 14H to 33H are not used for socket grub screws. Stainless steel grub screws are graded under ISO 3506-3: A2-21H for SS 304 and A4-21H for SS 316.
