What Is an Allen Cap Screw?

An Allen cap screw has a round, cylindrical head with a hexagon socket. It is tightened with an Allen key (hex key), so it fits into counterbored holes and tight spaces where a spanner cannot reach. The common standards are DIN 912, ISO 4762 and IS 2269.

Grades and Finishes

  • Stainless steel SS 304 / SS 316 resists rust and is used on food, pharma, marine and outdoor equipment; SS 202 is an economical choice for dry, indoor use.
  • High tensile 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9 is hardened steel for dies, moulds, machine tools and heavy machinery. Grade 12.9 Allen bolts are commonly supplied in a black (self colour) finish.

Applications

  • Machine tools, dies and moulds
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • Automobile and engineering components
  • Food processing and packaging machines
  • Jigs, fixtures and automation equipment

Allen Cap Screw FAQs

Is an Allen bolt the same as a socket head cap screw?

Yes. Allen bolt, Allen cap screw and socket head cap screw (SHCS) are names for the same part: a cylindrical head with a hexagon socket, made to DIN 912 / ISO 4762.

Which Allen key fits an M10 Allen cap screw?

An M10 socket head cap screw to DIN 912 takes an 8 mm Allen key. M6 takes 5 mm, M8 takes 6 mm and M12 takes 10 mm.

Why choose 12.9 Allen bolts?

Grade 12.9 has a tensile strength of about 1200 MPa, the highest common grade. It is used where a joint carries a high load in a small space, such as dies and machine spindles.
