A square nut has four sides and a larger bearing face than a hex nut of the same size. Its flat sides stop it from turning in slots and channels. The common standards are DIN 557 and DIN 562 (thin type).
A square nut does not spin in a slot or channel, and its bigger contact area grips better on soft materials.
